UX Quick Case Study
Why Onboarding for Podium
Estimated 3 min
What is Podium
Podium is a platform for reading and reviewing clinical trial summaries written for the everyday person. By collecting feedback from users, Podium helps insure that clinical trial summaries are understandable to the people who matter most.
Problem
The Podium application is the first of its kind, so users will need help learning how to use the tool. Most users are unpaid volunteers who are experiencing a disease state or are reviewing clinical trials on behalf of a sick loved one.
Solution
New Podium users are greeted by 4 onboarding screens designed to greet them and explain how to use the application in simple terms.

User Demographics
User information derived from 4 user interviews
ALL USERS: Unpaid volunteers
USER AGE: 13 and over
PREFERRED USER DEVICES: Users age 50 and over prefer accessing from home computers, all other users prefer mobile devices and are often on-the-go
USER MOTIVATION: Users are motivated to learn about the findings of clinical trials due to their own disease state or the illness of another. They want to learn about result of the trial and if the drug or treatment is available.

Initial Design Approach
When new users are added to the system, the platform sends them a default OpenPharma email with a login link and no other instructions.
With the goal to create a smooth experience for new Podium users, I designed a welcome email to accompany the login link.
While the email would be sent by the OpenPharma system, it would include a branded Podium greeting and a short description of how it works. The “Review Now” CTA button at the end of the message would pass the user’s email address into the username field and pre-fill a temporary password, simplifying the sign in process.

Onboarding Screens
Pivoting away from the welcome email solution after learning we could not alter the initial system message. We met our challenge to orient and educate new users with these onboarding screens.
